Restaurant Reviews    Updated 07/22/2008

Below are reviews of some of my favorite restaurants in the Historic District
of old Savannah, Tybee Island and Midtown Savannah.  My recommendations
are based on actual visits, details from guests on my tours and unbiased
reviews in the local press.

To the right is the line for Paula Deen's Lady & Sons at 9AM  - ouch!

Historic District

The Olde Pink House is one of the most romantic restaurants in
Savannah.  A table on the second floor overlooking Reynolds Square is sure to
impress.  Serving traditional southern fare but with a touch of elegance and
sophistication.  Service is outstanding.  Dinner only.  No web site.

I'm the good looking fellow in the photo ->.

Il Pasticcio is located on the corner of Bull and Broughton Streets.  I had
the best steak I have eaten since moving to Savannah.  Expensive, but well
worth it.  Outstanding wine selection.
Savannah Chop House just opened
upstairs.  (912) 231-8888

Vic's On The River just opened with great views of the river with good
food.  "Vic" is Dr. Victor, the most interesting urologist you will ever meet.  If
he is in, have him stop by your table.  Claims to own 4,000 cookbooks.  Piano
Bar too. 17 East River Street

Spanky's on River Street offers the best chicken fingers in the world!
Great for watching people and ships passing by.  Perfect for kids and
teenagers.

The Gryphon Tea Room on the south side of Madison Square has
gotten rave reviews from "brunchers and lunchers" on my tours.  Owned by
SCAD, they serve more than tea & scones.  Located in the beautiful Scotish
Rite Temple on Madison Square.
Always closed for dinner and on Sundays.

The Firefly Café' on Troup Square is great spot featured in Southern
Living and the Atlanta Constitution.  Wonderful corn chowder and vegetarian
dishes offered.
Not to be missed.  In 3 years you will stand in lines for a
table.  I recommend the grilled salmon sandwich while my bride always orders
a small spinach salad & bowl of chowder.
Closed Mondays.

Vinnie Van Go Go's is at the Franklin Square end of City Market and is
known for great pizza as well as people watching.  Open late.
CASH ONLY.

Belfords in City Market offers breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Great food  &
location with nice people.

Gallery Espresso on Chippewa Square is known as Savannah's "oldest
and most award winning coffee house".  I can attest to a great espresso.
Great place to take a break.  Located in the middle of the historic district on
Chippewa Square.

Express Cafe & Bakery is a great spot for breakfast or lunch right
off City Market.  Friendly faces and pretty decor with fresh baked breads
and sweets.
Cinnamon buns anyone?  Kids menu available.

Smooth at 143 Bull Street is an internet cafe offering Savannah's
premier smoothies and coffees.  I love the ice coffee.  The big hot pretzels
are a nice touch.  Be sure to say hello to Susan.

The bride loves Cafe' Ambrosia on the corner of Abercorn and
Broughton.  Great for breakfast, brunch, lunch or afternoon break.  Open 7
days a week from 8 AM (10 AM on Sunday).  912-443-0909

J.Christopher's is a great diner near the Cathedral a the corner of
Abercorn and Liberty.  Very good breakfast, lunch and brunch 7 days a week
from 7AM until 2PM.  912-236-7497

Tybee Island
North Beach Grill at the base of the Tybee Lighthouse is not to be
missed. Funky little Caribbean restaurant.  Just pick something off the menu and
you will love it.  My favorites include the jerk pork or crab burgers.  Service can
be slow due to the small kitchen and you can expect a 1 - 2 hour wait for a table
during summer in the evenings.  Open for lunch or dinner.  Some coupons for
discounted drinks are floating around.

The Sugar Shack at the big curve on Butler Ave has been there 35 years
serving up some great burgers, rings and milkshakes.  That sweet little old lady
taking your order is "Momma" who has run it since day one.

Midtown Savannah
Bella's Italian Café offers some tasty family Italian dishes with the best
pizza in Savannah.  Voted best Italian restaurant.  They've got my vote for 2008.
Beautiful little restaurant on Habersham St at 60th.

Seasons Express next to TJ Maxx has great Japanese food at low prices.
Open until 9 PM (8:30 PM on Sunday), they have the same prices for lunch and
dinner.    I hit it at least once a week for lunch.
Say hello to Toshi the owner who
is a retired touring golf pro from Japan.  Very nice guy who loves to talk golf.

I can describe every meal I have eaten at Kao with one word -Wow!  A Thai
restaurant
(pronouced "cow") that mixes many Savannah seafood favorites.  This
restaurant appeals to all five senses.  Great food and beautiful presentations.
